Orange County now lists the Heritage Trail as a 19.5-mile route from Middletown to Harriman. Built largely on the former Erie Railroad right-of-way, the ten-foot-wide corridor supports walking, bicycling, and rollerblading; its Middletown access connects the city to communities eastward. That reused rail route fits a city whose 19th- and early-20th-century growth was closely connected to rail service. Middletown is Orange County's largest city, with 30,345 residents in the 2020 census and an estimated 30,098 in July 2025. More than 36 percent of residents age five or older spoke a language other than English at home, and workers' average travel time was 36 minutes. Beyond the trail, Middletown maintains 14 parks for field and court sports, fishing, swimming, concerts, picnics, playground use, and walking. Its year-round recreation schedule includes preschool, teen, fitness, basketball, soccer, tennis, and community-center programs; for summer 2026, the city opened pools at Fancher-Davidge and Sproat Street parks and scheduled concerts at Run 4 Downtown Park.

Downtown, the 1,100-seat Paramount Theatre, built in 1929 and operated by the city since 2013, presents regular movies as well as comedy, music, lectures, and live performances. Middletown Thrall Library offers programs and research services plus cardholder passes to destinations ranging from Storm King Art Center and DIA Beacon to the New York Transit Museum and Empire State parks. SUNY Orange's Middletown campus adds college classes, workforce and noncredit programs, and public cultural events; founded there in 1950, the institution was the first county-sponsored community college in the State University of New York system. Parks, trail access, the theater, library, and college give residents multiple public gathering places.
