Middleville, NY

Middleville grew where West Canada Creek cuts through the valley between Newport and Fairfield. Sheffield Kenyon purchased the land in 1806, and waterpower drew public houses, blacksmith shops, mills, and a tannery; by 1814 the Herkimer Manufacturing Company had a stone works for wool, cotton, flax, and iron. The railroad arrived in 1880, and the village incorporated in 1890 as its growing population needed a formal water system. The 2020 census counted 407 residents.

Today the creek still divides the village's geography, with Route 28 and local bridges tying both banks together. The Lalino and Route 29 stone arch bridges preserve pieces of that older road network, while village water service, parks, library, volunteer fire department, churches, and school connections through West Canada Valley Central School in Newport keep the practical side running. The creek remains the village's main landmark. Middleville's calendar is small-town and neighborly—village board meetings, water work, and an annual ice cream social—set against the creek valley and Adirondack foothills.
