Middleway, WV

Middleway is a Jefferson County CDP in the lower Shenandoah Valley, but it reads more like a preserved village than a typical subdivision map. The settlement was established as Smithfield by a 1786 act of the Virginia General Assembly, then changed names after a post office opened in 1806 and another Smithfield caused confusion. The new name, Middleway, fit its position on old valley routes between larger communities. Stone buildings, churches, houses, and small roads still give the historic center its shape.

The Middleway Historic District captures late-eighteenth- and early-nineteenth-century architecture in a compact stretch of Jefferson County. Charles Town, Shepherdstown, Martinsburg, and the Maryland line are all part of the wider daily network, but Middleway keeps its own scale and its own visual memory. This is a place where the road bends past buildings that predate the modern county map, and where a name change from Smithfield to Middleway tells you how much local life once depended on a post office and a stage route. The historic district is not a backdrop here; it is the community's clearest address.
