About Midway
Midway is a Baxter County census-designated place about 5.5 miles northwest of Mountain Home, where Arkansas Highways 5, 126, and 178 meet. The 2020 census counted 1,036 residents, and the CDP covers about 5.53 square miles. It has no incorporated town government; the boundary is a statistical place, so the local map is made by county roads, the Mountain Home School District, and the nearby county seat. Highway 5 points east to Mountain Home, 126 runs south toward the Baxter County Regional Airport and Gassville, and 178 runs west toward Lakeview, Bull Shoals, and Bull Shoals Lake.
Midway's older story is tied to a rural trading post and the construction of Bull Shoals Dam, which brought a short-lived boom before the area settled into the lake-oriented economy of visitors and retirees. Today it remains a named Ozark crossroads rather than an incorporated downtown: the school district map, highway junction, and routes to Mountain Home, Bull Shoals, and the airport do most of the orienting.
