Midway, PA (Borough)

Midway is a Washington County borough on the boundary between Smith and Robinson townships, about 22 miles west of Pittsburgh and 22 miles east of Steubenville. The name came from the borough’s position along the Pennsylvania Railroad, while an earlier village called Egypt occupied the site before the Civil War. The railroad’s route gave Midway its reason for being: a small settlement placed between larger river and industrial towns.

Midway Borough covers about 0.44 square miles and is served by Fort Cherry School District. Its office on St. John Street and sewer authority on Noblestown Road point to the compact municipal map, while the surrounding townships provide the wider rural setting. The borough was incorporated on February 9, 1903. The borough’s streets still gather around the old rail alignment today. Midway is a Pennsylvania railroad place whose present-day scale is small, whose boundaries grew from two townships, and whose name still describes the location that put it on the map.
