Milam, TX

Milam is Sabine County’s oldest town, set at the Sabine River where Highways 21 and 87 cross. The road through town follows the old El Camino Real, later called the Old San Antonio Road, and the site began as a Spanish-named watering place before becoming a trading post in 1834. Milam served as the county seat from 1836 to 1858, and the Causey House and El Camino Park keep that early Texas chapter visible. The town’s annual Milam Settlers Day raises money for the house, cemetery, park, and a local scholarship. The local shorthand is river crossing, old road, county-seat history, and a calendar that still turns toward settlement stories.
