Milan, MO

Milan is the Sullivan County seat in north-central Missouri, where Routes 5 and 6 cross on the west side of Locust Creek. The 2020 census counted 1,819 residents. Milan C-2 School District and the Sullivan County Public Library serve the city, while the courthouse and Route 5/6 businesses give it a countywide role. Locust Creek Conservation Area begins about three miles southwest, adding bottomland forest, wetland, cropland, and prairie stream country to the city’s working map.

Milan was laid out in 1845, probably named for Milan, Italy, and its post office has operated since 1847. The city grew as a courthouse and market center for Sullivan County, with roads leading through a broad agricultural region. Locust Creek still runs along the west side, and the conservation area follows one of the last largely unchannelized prairie streams in Missouri.
