Milford, IL

Milford is an Iroquois County village of 1,158 residents at the 2020 census, built around the kind of crossing that gives a place its name. The Old Hubbard Trail forded Sugar Creek here, and a gristmill stood at the crossing in 1836. Settlement began along the creek in 1830, and Milford incorporated in 1874. Sugar Creek still traces the village's southern edge before turning north toward the Iroquois River, keeping the original water-and-road logic visible on today's map.

Illinois Route 1 carries Milford north to Watseka and south to Hoopeston, each about twelve miles away, while the school gives the village its loudest local cheer. Milford High School teams play as the Bearcats and Lady Cats, and football has used cooperative arrangements with Cissna Park and other nearby communities. The result is a place with a literal old ford at its center, a creek running along its edge, and a school sports identity that reaches across the surrounding farm country.
