Milford, MA

Milford pink granite carried the town's name far beyond Worcester County. Quarrying expanded after the stone was identified around 1860, and more than 1,000 people worked in the quarries by 1900. Rail service, which arrived in 1848, moved granite as well as locally made boots and shoes to larger markets; the stone appeared in buildings, bridges, and monuments across the country and as far away as Paris. Milford's earlier English settlement formed within the Mendon tract deeded by Nipmuc people in 1662. King Philip's War destroyed that settlement in 1676, settlers began returning in 1680, and the eastern precinct incorporated as Milford in 1780. The town had 30,379 residents at the 2020 census. A former rail corridor now provides one of Milford's most continuous public spaces. The Upper Charles Trail runs 6.5 unbroken miles from the Holliston boundary through town to the Hopkinton line, with a senior-center spur and an accessible, signalized crossing at Route 85.

It is Milford's completed segment of a proposed 27-mile, six-town loop. The Conservation Commission, which helped develop the trail, also stocks Louisa Lake with trout each spring. In warmer months, the municipal pool at Fino Field and long-running band concerts in Town Park add other regular outdoor options; the town continues Memorial Day and Veterans Day parades and an Independence Day fireworks and concert tradition. Memorial Hall, built in 1884 as a Civil War memorial and used as Milford's library for a century, now houses the Historical Museum. The present Milford Town Library lends museum passes and an unusually broad Library of Things, including mobile hotspots, outdoor equipment and games, Roku devices, ukuleles, video-game equipment, and home or office tools. It also provides computers, Wi-Fi, meeting rooms, ESL help, homebound delivery, and notary service.
