Milford, NY

Milford is the village center of the Town of Milford in Otsego County, where the Susquehanna River, farms, and old transportation lines make the local map easy to read. The broader town had 3,044 people at the 2010 census. Its present name dates to 1800, when the municipality changed from Town of Suffrage to Milford. Matthew and David Cully began a settlement near Milford Center in 1773; a grist mill followed in the 1780s, and the first town meeting met in 1796.

Water and travel set the town's shape. Peter Collier and Jared Goodyear built a Susquehanna dam in 1806, while a railroad reached the area in 1869 and the Village of Milford incorporated in 1890. A Goodyear Lake dam and hydroelectric station followed in 1907, and Milford became one of New York's early centralized school districts in 1927. The Sayre House, preserved through the Greater Milford Historical Association, and the Milford Free Library's local newspaper archive keep that story close to the present.
