Mililani Town, HI

Mililani Town was laid out at metropolitan scale before its first homes were occupied. The master plan covered about 3,500 acres on Oahu's Schofield Plateau, and the first houses were completed in 1968 as part of a development intended for over 60,000 residents. Three planned sections were separated by Kamehameha Highway and, later, the H-2 Freeway, with a central core reserved for civic, commercial, park, and medium-density residential uses. That original Town is distinct from Mililani Mauka, which opened east of H-2 in 1990. The freeway division matters in ordinary orientation. Addresses on the older street network west of H-2 belong to Mililani Town. Much of the association's newer housing and several recreation centers lie across the freeway in Mauka. The Mililani Town Association was established in 1968 and still supplies a major layer of local administration.

Its current strategic plan covers both Mililani Town and Mililani Mauka, together comprising 15,829 homes on over 3,500 acres. The association maintains buildings and common areas, handles landscaping and design review, enforces covenants, collects assessments, and runs programs. Seven recreation centers spread those services across the two sections. Homeowners and tenants with transferred privileges can reserve association facilities, and many events require an active member account. For residents, that means pools, classes, grounds, and gatherings are closely tied to association membership, while the City and County of Honolulu provides public government for this census-designated place. Everyday destinations and local workplaces are spread through the two planned sections. Shopping centers, markets, restaurants, churches, health-care offices, professional offices, schools, and the Mililani Public Library occupy the wider Town-Mauka community, with the library's 2026 calendar including storytimes, workshops, and a monthly book club.

Kamehameha Highway and the Mililani Transit Center form the public-transit spine. TheBus Route 52 schedule effective May 31, 2026, linked the transit center with Downtown Honolulu and Ala Moana in one direction and Wahiawa and Haleiwa in the other. Weekday Route 84A also provided express trips between Mililani and Downtown Honolulu. Local routes connect the transit center with Mililani Mauka, making the central terminal a practical bridge between the two planned sections as well as the larger island. Association life moves among seven recreation centers spread across Town and Mauka. Recreation Center 1 on Ikaloa Street is in Mililani Town; centers 5, 6, and 7 are in Mauka, and the event calendar sends members across the freeway.

The 2026 calendar sent movies to Recreation Center 1 and bingo, a night market, a home expo, and an autumn craft fair to other centers. The seven centers also carry aquatics, sports, fitness, and rental programs through the year. Public library programs offer a separate, open civic setting near the Town core. A movie night at Recreation Center 1, a book-club meeting at the state library, and a bus departure from Mililani Transit Center all occur within the planned system begun in 1968. An association event in Mauka requires crossing the H-2 boundary added to that system later.
