Mill Valley, CA

Located at the base of Mount Tamalpais about 14 miles north of San Francisco, Mill Valley is known for a hidden network of more than 175 public stairways and footpaths. Originally built in the late 1800s so residents could walk straight down steep hillsides to catch trains and ferries, these pathways are still an active part of daily life. Because canyon roads wind along slow switchbacks, taking a wooden staircase through the redwoods is often the quickest way to walk down to coffee or dinner. Local volunteers help clear the paths during neighborhood workdays, and the city maps them as both scenic walking routes and vital wildfire evacuation paths.

The town originally grew around a historic lumber mill and a scenic railroad that carried weekend visitors from San Francisco up the mountain. While passenger trains stopped running almost a century ago, the restored Depot building remains the center of town, operating as a lively cafe and bookstore on the downtown plaza. Mount Tamalpais still shapes the outdoor rhythm of the community, with miles of hiking, trail running, and mountain biking routes starting right from neighborhood streets, including the famous Dipsea Trail.

Everyday errands and dining cluster around the downtown square and along Miller and East Blithedale Avenues. You will find independent bakeries, farm-to-table restaurants, grocery markets, and local coffee shops alongside boutiques and outdoor gear stores. Quiet residential neighborhoods branch off into redwood-shaded canyons like Cascade and Blithedale, offering a mix of historic cottages, mid-century homes, and modern custom builds. For commuters, Highway 101 runs along the edge of town, and local buses link directly to ferry terminals in Sausalito and Larkspur for a scenic ride across the bay.

Community events and cultural gatherings give the town a relaxed, close-knit feel. Just a couple of blocks from the square, Old Mill Park sits beneath tall redwoods along a creek, right next to a public library with stone fireplaces and a reading deck surrounded by trees. Mill Valley also supports a strong arts and music scene, anchored by the long-running Mill Valley Film Festival at the Sequoia Cinema, live shows at the Sweetwater Music Hall, and monthly downtown art walks.
