Millbourne, PA

Millbourne is a self-governing Delaware County borough along Cobbs Creek, directly beside Philadelphia. The 2020 census counted 1,212 residents. Samuel Sellers settled the area in 1682, and the name combines “mill” with “bourne,” an old word for creek. Today the borough is a compact piece of the Philadelphia edge: Market Street forms the southern boundary, Cobbs Creek wraps the north and east, and Fairmount Park lies across the water. The borough’s small footprint makes every boundary matter, especially when a creek separates Millbourne homes from Philadelphia parkland. Millbourne Station gives the place a direct SEPTA connection, and the station’s metal peacock feathers add a very specific bit of color to the daily commute.

The borough once relied heavily on property taxes from a Sears store, so the store’s 1988 closure left a fiscal hole that still belongs in the local story. Millbourne now works through borough government, transit, nearby Philadelphia services, small businesses, and the narrow streets between Market Street and Cobbs Creek. It is not a suburb with endless room to spread; it is a tiny municipal pocket where a train station, a creek, and a city line shape the whole day.
