Millbrae, CA

Millbrae has deep roots as a classic Peninsula railway stop. Back in the 1860s, local landowner Darius Ogden Mills helped build an early depot to ship milk from his dairy farms, naming the area by pairing his own surname with the Scottish word "brae," meaning rolling hills. While early wooden stations were lost over the years, the community rallied in the 1970s to save its charming 1907 depot from demolition. Today, that restored yellow building operates as the Millbrae Train Museum, giving residents a tangible link to the town's agricultural beginnings.

That vintage station now sits right beside one of the Bay Area's most convenient modern transit hubs. Millbrae is famous among commuters because BART and Caltrain meet here at the exact same platform, making trips north into San Francisco, south toward Silicon Valley, or directly into SFO remarkably easy. The surrounding area has evolved alongside the tracks, too. Recent neighborhood additions like the Gateway development have brought brand-new apartments, casual eateries, and retail shops directly to the station footsteps, adding a lively energy to what used to be simple commuter parking.
