Milledgeville, IL

Milledgeville is a Carroll County village in northern Illinois, with 1,026 residents in the 2020 census. Its story began with a sawmill built in 1834, later converted by Adam L. Knox into a gristmill for area farmers. Knox and surveyor Philander Seymour laid out the village in 1850, and the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad arrived in 1866, increasing the movement of goods and people. The original mill was gone by 1908, but its name still sits inside the village map.

Chadwick-Milledgeville Community Unit School District 399 keeps K–12 classes in the Milledgeville school building, tying the village to nearby rural families and Chadwick. Route 40 leads south toward Sterling and Rock Falls, about 15 miles away, while the old mill area and downtown streets preserve the outline of the first settlement. Milledgeville is a small farming village where waterpower became rail commerce, rail commerce became a school-centered community, and the old mill name remains the easiest clue to how the place began.
