Millersburg, KY

Millersburg is a home rule-class city in northern Bourbon County, Kentucky, on Hinkston Creek and US Route 68 between Paris and Carlisle. Major John Miller established the town on part of his land after the first settlers arrived in 1778; the town's early map grew around the creek, a mill, and the Lexington-Maysville road. Millersburg's architecture still carries several eras at once, from late-eighteenth- and early-nineteenth-century buildings to post-Civil War commercial blocks and antebellum houses. The public square, cast-iron fence, and old church site add another layer to the town center.

Education is the thread that sets Millersburg apart. From the Civil War through World War I, the city served as a Bourbon County educational center with Millersburg Male and Female Academy and Kentucky Wesleyan College. Millersburg Military Institute began in 1893 and later occupied the 18-acre Sanford Allen homestead. After the military school tradition ended, the property was renamed Mustard Seed Hill and has been restored and renovated. Millersburg is a road-and-creek town whose older institutions still give shape to its streets.
