Millinocket, ME

Millinocket is the developed center of the town of Millinocket in Penobscot County, at the southern end of Mount Katahdin's north-woods orbit. The 2020 census counted 4,104 residents in the CDP. An Abenaki name for "land of many islands" sits underneath the modern town story: Thomas Fowler settled here in 1829, the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad arrived in 1894, and Great Northern Paper began building its mill in 1899. The mill drew workers from around the world and gave Millinocket its old "Magic City" nickname. Today the town is the launch point for the Katahdin region: Baxter State Park, Katahdin Woods and Waters, the West Branch of the Penobscot, the Golden Road, and the Allagash are all part of the wider local orbit.

The old mill-and-rail story still sits underneath the outdoor economy, with paddling, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, and mountain trips sending people north and west. Millinocket's local scoop is a paper-mill town that became a north-woods base camp, with one foot in industrial Maine and the other in Katahdin country.
