Spread across wide river valleys where the Mills River meets the French Broad, Mills River offers a quiet, scenic lifestyle with plenty of breathing room. Community life revolves around local food and the outdoors. You can pick up fresh produce, eggs, and handmade goods at the seasonal Saturday farm market, or head over to Mills River Park. The park acts as a central hub for residents, complete with paved walking trails, a dog park, sports courts, a playground, and river access for fishing or paddling. Just down the road, Sierra Nevada Brewing Company built its East Coast headquarters, a sprawling destination with an open-air taproom, restaurant, wooded walking paths, and a lawn for summer concerts.

If you are looking at real estate, keep in mind that utilities and land setups vary from house to house. While some subdivisions connect to municipal water or sewer through neighboring systems, plenty of homes rely on private wells and septic tanks. Because the town is built around river bottoms, checking current flood maps, drainage, and elevation is essential, especially after major weather events like Hurricane Helene. A house in a neighborhood near Route 280 will have very different utility and zoning considerations than a few acres tucked along the water, so be sure to check those parcel details early in your home search.
