Milltown, WI

Milltown is a Polk County village on Wisconsin 35 and 46, with Polk County Road G feeding into the same northwestern Wisconsin grid. The 2020 census counted 948 residents, and the village sits inside the larger Town of Milltown. The surrounding area is lake country: Balsam, Half Moon, and Antler lakes are nearby, and local history counts 13 fishing lakes within eight miles. That gives Milltown a split rhythm - farm roads and school traffic during the week, lake country when the water and cabins call.

Patrick Lillis, an Irish immigrant, made a claim where the village now stands in 1856 and named the place for his home in County Cork. The township formed in 1869, the Soo Line reached town in 1901, and a flour mill followed the next decade. In 1950, the Milltown Fisherman's Party began as a two-day celebration of the area's lakes. Unity School opened four miles southeast after Balsam Lake, Centuria, and Milltown joined school operations in 1961. Milltown still carries those layers together: a railroad village, a lake-country stop, and a rural community with its own village government.
