Millvale, PA

Millvale is an Allegheny County borough across the Allegheny River from Pittsburgh, tucked off Pennsylvania Route 28 where Girty's Run meets the river. It had 3,376 residents in the 2020 census. Much of the borough sits on the floodplain, so the river is both a physical constraint and a route into the city. The Three Rivers Heritage Trail follows the shoreline from Millvale toward Pittsburgh's North Shore, PNC Park, and Acrisure Stadium, with Millvale Riverfront Park along the way. Millvale's strongest cultural landmark is St. Nicholas Croatian Catholic Church, built in 1901 as the first Croatian parish in the United States.

Inside, Maxo Vanka painted murals in 1937 and 1941 that reflect the lives of the church's working-class immigrant congregation; guided tours and conservation work keep them in use today. Shaler Area School District serves the borough. The local map brings together a river trail, a flood-prone riverfront, an immigrant church, and a short connection to Pittsburgh's stadiums and employment centers.
