Milstead, GA

Milstead is a small Rockdale County community on the south bank of the Yellow River, just north of Conyers. Its shape comes from a cotton mill established in 1902 by the Milstead Manufacturing Company. Houses, work buildings, and village streets grew around that operation, giving the community a clear mill-town history even though it remains unincorporated. The 2020 census counted 628 residents.

The river is still the key to understanding Milstead’s setting. The community sits close to Conyers and the county’s larger civic life, but its story is tied to the wooded Yellow River corridor and the mill village that developed beside it. Recent preservation and revitalization work has focused on caring for that history while supporting small-scale local activity. Old mill-era buildings and the river landscape give Milstead a compact residential character with a strong industrial past and a recognizable place along the water. The setting is especially legible where old mill-era buildings meet the riverbank and roads into Conyers.
