Milton, KY

Milton is a Trimble County city on the south bank of the Ohio River. The 2020 census recorded 597 residents. It was settled in 1785 and founded in 1789, when the area was still part of Virginia. A ferry to Madison, Indiana, began in 1804, establishing the crossing that still defines Milton's place on the river. Today US 421 crosses the Ohio via the Milton-Madison Bridge, the only road link between Kentucky and Indiana for 40 miles in either direction. That connection makes Milton a border town in the most literal sense.

Milton's riverfront history includes the 1928-29 bridge, the Great Flood of 1937, and the loss of homes along High Street when the Ohio rose to 71.1 feet. The town also appeared in the 1958 film Some Came Running, filmed with the river and bridge as part of its setting. With its small population, Milton remains Trimble County's largest city and its main cross-river gateway, a place where a ferry-era settlement now functions through a modern highway span.
