About Milwaukie
Downtown Milwaukie puts regional transit, civic services, recurring events, and the Willamette River in the same small district. The Milwaukie/Main Street station sends MAX Orange Line trains toward Portland’s city center, while the city’s downtown guide directs people a few blocks away to the Ledding Library, Milwaukie Bay Park, and the Sunday farmers market. The market brings more than 80 vendors downtown from May through October. Ledding Library supplies public computers and Wi-Fi as well as study, conference, and community rooms. Beside it, Scott Park and Spring Creek Pond form another public space; the reconstructed park was completed in fall 2024 and dedicated in March 2025 after the city secured more than $2.25 million for Scott and two other neighborhood parks.
These facilities make the center useful on an ordinary library visit, a weekday train trip, or a market Sunday rather than only during special festivals. The river adds several different kinds of outdoor access. Milwaukie Bay Park provides a downtown gathering place and boat access, Spring Park has waterside walking routes, and Elk Rock Island protects a less-developed natural area. That relationship predates the present city: the Clackamas people lived along this bank of the Willamette long before Oregon Territory, and the city’s official history also credits orchard worker Ah Bing with creating the Bing cherry here.
Milwaukie has continued to grow within a footprint of 4.98 square miles. By July 2025, the official estimate reached 22,114 residents, 4.5 percent above the April 2020 estimate base. Among occupied homes, owners accounted for 60.8 percent during 2020 through 2024. Their median value was $505,100, compared with median gross rent of $1,598. Adults age 65 or older made up 18.2 percent, and the mean trip to work was 25.6 minutes. Milwaukie’s older river history remains visible in a center now shaped by light rail, year-round civic services, and recently rebuilt parks.
