About Minden
Minden is a Pottawattamie County city with a post office dating to 1875, part of the farm-country network west of the Council Bluffs–Omaha area. Tri-Center Community School District serves Minden and nearby rural communities, with the high school in Neola. The 2020 census counted 600 residents. The town’s scale and location are easy to read in the way school, roads, and neighboring farmsteads connect it to the wider county. Those ties matter as the town rebuilds after the storm.
That local pattern was tested by the EF3 tornado that struck on April 26, 2024. Homes and businesses were destroyed, and the city’s recovery work has continued through rebuilding, planning, and outside support. Minden’s own recovery effort describes the tornado as a break in the town’s trajectory, with residents working through a process measured in years. The result is a place whose current story includes both the older routines of school and farm roads and the visible work of putting homes, businesses, and community spaces back together.
