Saint Anthony Falls, historically known as Owamniyomni by the Dakota people, marks the birthplace of modern Minneapolis. The only major waterfall on the Mississippi River once powered the massive 19th-century flour mills that earned the city its nickname, Mill City. Today, that historic riverfront has transformed into one of the most scenic neighborhoods in the metro. Converted brick flour mills now house bright residential lofts, bustling offices, and the interactive Mill City Museum. Southwest of downtown, the Chain of Lakes serves as the outdoor hub of everyday life. Paved loops wrap around Cedar Lake, Lake of the Isles, Bde Maka Ska, and Lake Harriet, where residents gather for paddleboarding, sailing, and summer concerts at the lakeside bandshell. The lakes connect seamlessly to the Grand Rounds, an extensive trail and parkway system that loops around the entire city. Minneapolis locals embrace the outdoors in all four seasons. The city quickly plows regional bike and walking trails after snowstorms, while nearby Theodore Wirth Park offers miles of groomed trails for cross-country skiing, fat-tire biking, and snowshoeing.

Beyond the water, neighborhood corridors showcase the city's rich diversity and incredible food scene. On Lake Street, the bustling Midtown Global Market fills a historic building with dozens of independent food stalls and specialty shops, alongside cultural spaces like the Somali Museum. Lively commercial stretches in Cedar-Riverside, Eat Street on Nicollet Avenue, and West Broadway feature fantastic family-run restaurants, bakeries, community spaces, and arts organizations. During the warmer months, events like Open Streets close major avenues to cars, turning entire commercial corridors into welcoming festivals filled with local vendors, musicians, and neighbors.

Minneapolis also provides a strong, balanced job market anchored by healthcare networks, corporate employers, and major institutions like the University of Minnesota. Spanning both sides of the river, the university drives substantial activity in research, medicine, arts, and education. Downtown combines major employers and financial institutions with landmark cultural venues like the Guthrie Theater along the riverfront. Getting around is convenient thanks to a transit network featuring the Blue and Green light rail lines, expanding bus rapid transit routes, and some of the highest-rated urban bike infrastructure in the country.
