Minneola, KS

Minneola is a city in Clark County, Kansas, at the meeting of U.S. Routes 54 and 283 in the southwestern part of the state. Its beginnings are tied to the railroad and to a nearby town that lost the contest for the tracks. Appleton was established in 1885, but the Rock Island line bypassed it; Minneola, chartered in 1887, received the first passenger train on January 19, 1888. The name was formed from Minne and Ola, the names of two daughters of a Minneola Town Company president. That blend of rail timing, town promotion, and family names sits at the heart of the city's early history. The surrounding landscape is open prairie and farm country, with the highway junction giving the city a clear place in Clark County.

Early Minneola moved through boom, weather, and reinvention. A sugar mill opened in 1889 but operated only a few weeks, while stores, a blacksmith, livery, hotel, and other businesses filled out the new town. Drought and hot winds put pressure on the area in the 1890s; stronger wheat harvests at the turn of the century helped local fortunes improve. The Minneola Record began in 1906, and the city later developed its water, streets, lighting, and school institutions. The railroad story remains visible in the way Minneola replaced Appleton as the regional stop. It is a small Kansas city whose name, highways, and first train all point back to the same prairie crossroads.
