Mio, MI

Mio is the unincorporated county seat at the center of Oscoda County, spread along the Au Sable River and the boundaries of Mentor, Big Creek, and Elmer townships. The community was established in 1881 as Mioe, a name honoring Marla Deyarmond, wife of founder Henry Deyarmond. Its history follows the river and the forest: before modern roads, supplies moved toward Lake Huron by river or ox team, and Mio became a distribution point for the surrounding country. The county courthouse, built in 1888, stood as a local landmark until fire damaged it beyond repair in 2016.

Outdoor life now gives Mio a different kind of traffic. The Huron National Forest and Au Sable River bring anglers, paddlers, hunters, campers, and trail users through the area, while the county seat handles court, school, and government business for a large rural geography. Kirtland Community College’s service area reaches across several north-central counties, giving residents a nearby path into technical and general education. The town’s working landscape still depends on timber, small farms, public services, and seasonal visitors. Mio feels less like a conventional incorporated town than a river settlement that doubles as the county’s front office.
