About Mission

Mission reaches the Rio Grande along the Mexico–United States border in southern Hidalgo County, immediately west of McAllen. Mission counted 85,778 residents in 2020; a 2022 estimate placed the population at 86,635. The city belongs to both the McAllen–Edinburg–Mission and Reynosa–McAllen metropolitan areas. The Texas Citrus Exchange is based in Mission, and the annual Texas Citrus Fiesta Parade sends fruit-decorated floats along Conway Avenue. Interstate 2 and U.S. 83 pass south of the town center, leading about five miles east to downtown McAllen.
