Missouri Valley, IA

Missouri Valley is a Harrison County city in western Iowa, with 2,678 residents in the 2020 census. It began as St. John’s in 1856 at a meeting of three rail lines: the Chicago & North Western, Sioux City & Pacific, and Fremont, Elkhorn & Missouri Valley. When the banks failed and the rail alignment shifted, the settlement moved about two miles and took the name Missouri Valley. That railroad beginning still makes sense when you look at the city’s position between Council Bluffs, the Missouri River, and the Loess Hills. It is a city shaped by transportation, agriculture, and the long north-south roads across western Iowa. Missouri Valley’s everyday base is the Missouri Valley Community School District, which serves town and surrounding rural families; some students also attend Saint Albert Catholic Schools in Council Bluffs.

The city sits near the Loess Hills, and nearby routes lead toward the Missouri River valley, western Iowa farms, and the Omaha-Council Bluffs area. The old railroad story is still the best way to read the place, but it is not just a museum story. Schools, businesses, roads, and the rural area around town keep the same transportation-minded community functioning in a modern form. Missouri Valley feels like a rail town that settled into its role as a regional crossroads.
