Mitchellville is a majority-Black census-designated place in Prince George's County, east of Washington, D.C. It was named for John Mitchell, who owned Essington Hall, a plantation that once covered much of the area. Modern Mitchellville is suburban and residential, with Prince George's County Public Schools serving local families and commuter routes linking the area to Largo, Bowie, Upper Marlboro, and federal job centers.
