Mohawk, NY

Mohawk is a Herkimer County village on the southern bank of the Mohawk River and the historic Erie Canal, at the northern edge of German Flatts. The village officially took the Mohawk name in 1838 and incorporated in 1844, following the river that gives the valley its shape. New York State Route 5S runs through the village, linking it with the larger Mohawk Valley. With the river on one side and the canal beside it, Mohawk’s setting does most of the introducing.

The canal is the key local clue. Mohawk grew in a corridor where water, rail, and highway routes all run close together, with Herkimer across the river and Utica farther west. The river is still more than a name on the sign: it is the edge of the village, the reason the place sits here, and the thing that ties Mohawk to the older Erie Canal towns around it.
