Mokelumne Hill, known simply as "Moke Hill" to anyone who lives here, is a charming foothill community tucked along Highway 49 in Calaveras County. With a population of around 700 people, it offers a peaceful, slow-paced lifestyle steeped in California Gold Country heritage. Gold first put the town on the map in 1848, and after a major fire swept through in 1854, residents rebuilt using local rhyolite stone. That golden-brown stonework still defines the downtown area today, giving the historic core a timeless, rugged character.
