Monaville, WV

Monaville follows Island Creek through central Logan County, four miles south of Logan in a narrow valley that joins the Guyandotte River system. The place was once called Vanceville, a name still tied to late-nineteenth-century postal maps, before it became Monaville, likely in honor of Mona Wilkinson, the daughter of a local coal official. Coal gave the valley its lasting shape. The Logan Mining Company’s Mona Mine and Island Creek Coal workings brought rail, jobs, and a settlement pattern built around the creek, slopes, and company operations.

Some of Monaville’s most telling landmarks sit at the intersection of that mining past and local memory. Foster Armory remains part of the community’s built landscape, while an original split-log schoolhouse has been taken up as a preservation project at the West Virginia Capitol. The post office and ZIP code are gone, but WV 44 still threads the valley toward Logan and the southern communities. With 302 residents in the 2020 census, Monaville is small in headcount and large in the way its coal-country geography remains visible: the creek corridor, old camp names, and nearby county-seat connection all sit close together.
