Moneta, VA

Moneta is a Bedford County census-designated place along US 122 between Bedford and Rocky Mount, on the edge of Smith Mountain Lake country. The community sits in the Lynchburg metropolitan area and has grown from a roadside service place into a mix of long-time neighborhoods, lake homes, marinas, and public recreation. Smith Mountain Lake Airport is the nearest general-aviation field, and Crystal Shores Marina Resort gives boaters access to the lake. The Staunton River forms another piece of the local landscape, with water and wooded hills shaping the roads around the community.

Moneta Park gives the place a substantial public gathering ground. The 119-acre Bedford County park has two multi-use ball fields, a football and soccer field, an 18-hole disc golf course, picnic shelters, and trails for walking and biking. Olive Branch Missionary Baptist Church and the Holland-Duncan House are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, tying the lake-era community to older Bedford County history. Students attend Bedford County Public Schools, with Moneta Elementary, Staunton River Middle, and Staunton River High serving the area. The 2020 census counted 450 residents, but the roads around Moneta connect a much wider lake population to Bedford, Rocky Mount, and the water.
