About Monona

Monona is a Clayton County city whose story is tucked into a handful of dates. The post office opened in 1849, the city incorporated on May 11, 1897, and a 1916 snapshot found a public house, two stores, and several mechanic shops. The name has an Indigenous-language origin, while the modern school map reaches across town lines: Monona is part of the MFL MarMac Community School District, created in 1994 when the Mar-Mac and M-F-L districts merged. That gives Monona a nice contrast—an old post-office town with a school district built from a later regional merger. It is northeastern Iowa in a compact, workaday package.
