Monroe, PA

Monroe, also known as Monroeton, is a Bradford County borough tucked into the valley of Towanda Creek, a tributary of the Susquehanna. The borough is completely surrounded by Monroe Township, which gives the place a neat civic boundary inside a much larger rural landscape. The township was formed in 1821 from Towanda Township and was named for President James Monroe; the borough later developed along the creek and the roads linking the valley to Towanda and the rest of northeastern Pennsylvania.

Water shapes the setting here. Towanda Creek, Satterlee Creek, Schrader Creek, and Millstone Creek run through the surrounding township, while U.S. Route 220 and Pennsylvania Route 414 carry traffic across the hills. Towanda Area School District serves the area, and the borough’s 2020 census count was 482 residents. Monroe has the feel of a small place set inside a bigger map: a borough with its own streets and identity, ringed by a township of farms, churches, streams, and long roads toward the Susquehanna.
