About Montello

Montello is Marquette County's seat, with the Fox River running through the middle and Buffalo Lake held behind the city dam. The place has two oversized calling cards: a former granite quarry turned into a park with waterfalls, and what Wisconsin claims as its largest tree. The quarry was part of the reason a Wisconsin Central railroad spur reached Montello in 1882, so stone, water, and rail all show up in the town's shape. Montello is central Wisconsin in a quarry-and-river story.
