Montezuma, GA

At the 2020 census, Montezuma was a Macon County city of 3,047 people and the county seat, set on the east side of the Flint River across from Oglethorpe. The railroad reached the area in 1851, and the town took shape when people and buildings moved from Traveler's Rest to meet the new line. Soldiers returning from the Mexican-American War supplied the name; Montezuma incorporated in 1854. That origin gives the city an unusual split personality: river town on one side, railroad town on the other, with the county-seat role tying both halves together.

Montezuma's local story also includes a Mennonite community established by 10 to 15 families who moved from Virginia in the 1950s. The Georgia Army National Guard's Bravo Company, 648th Engineers, has its armory here, and Macon County Middle and High Schools keep public education in the center of town. Downtown events such as the Beaver Creek Festival and Duck Race add a newer layer to the old rail-and-river map. Montezuma is the kind of place where a railroad relocation, a county courthouse, a military armory, and a small river all end up sharing the same address book.
