Montezuma, KS

Montezuma sits in Gray County on the dry, open plains of southwestern Kansas. An older town began in the late nineteenth century, then moved north to meet the Santa Fe Railroad in 1912, carrying the name of the Aztec ruler Moctezuma II into a new rail setting. That move shaped the city that exists today: a grid of streets, farms beyond town, and a regional economy built around getting grain, people, and equipment across long distances.

The Gray County Wind Farm gives Montezuma a modern skyline of turbines, tying the city to one of Kansas's most visible energy industries. South Gray schools, local businesses, churches, and farm operations keep the daily schedule grounded, while the wind farm adds a large-scale presence beyond the town's population. Montezuma's history has always involved adaptation, from relocation to the railroad to new uses of the prairie wind. It remains a small city with a clear relationship to the land, the weather, and the infrastructure that makes western Kansas workable.
