Montgomery Village, MD

Montgomery Village was designed around lakes, neighborhood associations, and shared recreation rather than a municipal main street. Kettler Brothers began assembling farmland in 1962, broke ground for the first houses in 1966, and welcomed the first residents in September 1967. The developers even transplanted 10,000 mature pin oaks into Whetstone and Stedwick to give the new streets an established canopy. Its 2020 population was 34,893. This unincorporated community immediately north of Gaithersburg retains layered governance: Montgomery County handles zoning, emergency response, and other public services, while the Montgomery Village Foundation owns common land, operates recreation facilities, and enforces architectural standards alongside twelve homes corporations and eleven condominium associations. Census estimates for 2020–2024 found that 35 percent of residents were foreign-born and 54.1 percent of people age five and older spoke a language other than English at home. The foundation’s land and facilities make the original plan tangible in daily life.

It owns more than 335 acres and operates six seasonal pools, four community centers, and twenty recreation and park areas with ballfields, courts, playgrounds, ponds, and paths. Thirty-two-acre South Valley Park combines lighted fields and a playground with creeks, footbridges, picnic areas, and the Gordon Bowie Music Pavilion, where the foundation holds summer concerts. Its calendar also includes classes, camps, and an Independence Day parade and celebration. The Gaithersburg Library on Montgomery Village Avenue adds meeting and study rooms, a world-languages collection, public computers, and a Discovery Room; its second floor houses an immigrant resource center and a Montgomery College community-engagement office. For regional travel, Montgomery County’s 2026 Ride On route list includes four services labeled for Montgomery Village, linking parts of the community with Shady Grove Metrorail or Rockville.
