About Monticello

Monticello is a Green County village that took shape after Robert Witter entered the land in 1843 and A. F. Steadman and Hugh McClintock laid out the village in 1846. The name is easy to confuse with other Monticellos, but this one sits in the Sugar River country, with Lake Montesian and Montesian Gardens close to its center. The Badger State Trail and Sugar River State Trail meet just east of town, and the village’s local museum carries the old farm-and-cheese-factory story. If you’re reading the map, think Green County, two trails, one lake, and a village built around the river valley.
