Montreat, NC

Montreat is a Buncombe County town in the Blue Ridge foothills east of Asheville, built around a 4,000-acre mountain cove. The 2020 census counted 901 residents. The name blends mountain and retreat, which is about as direct a local clue as you can get. The Mountain Retreat Association began shaping the place in 1897, and the town incorporated in 1967 after the association handed municipal work to the town. Montreat Conference Center and Montreat College still share the cove with homes, trails, streams, and roads climbing through the hills.

The college began in 1916, and Billy and Ruth Bell Graham lived here for decades, adding another well-known thread to the town's story. Asheville and Black Mountain handle larger trips, while Montreat's town staff handle water, sewer, roads, police, and emergency work. Montreat's local scoop is a mountain retreat that grew into a town while keeping the conference grounds, college campus, and steep Blue Ridge setting that made the place what it is.
