Montrose, PA

Montrose is Susquehanna County’s seat, a borough laid out in 1812 and incorporated in 1824 on elevated ground about 1,400 feet above sea level. The name combines “mont,” French for mountain, with Rose, after Dr. L. R. Rose. The central streets hold a National Register historic district with buildings from the early nineteenth century through the 1930s, including the county courthouse complex, Silver Lake Bank, and Sylvanus Mulford House. Montrose also sits in the story of the Underground Railroad, with Susquehanna County’s anti-slavery movement helping make the Northern Trail a route through the area. It’s a courthouse town with a hill-country setting and a lot of old stone and brick still in view.
