Moores Hill, IN

Moores Hill is a Dearborn County town in Sparta Township, with 675 residents at the 2020 census. Adam Moore and Andrew Stevens platted it in 1839, laying out nine lots beside Moore’s gristmill. The settlement was first called Moores Mill, but a postal spelling mistake turned the name into Moores Hill, and that version stayed. The town grew around the mill, the roads through southeastern Indiana, and the small center that still carries the founders’ names.

Moores Hill College gave the town another chapter. Carnegie Hall, built for the college, later served as the local public school after the college closed, and both the hall and Moores Hill United Methodist Church are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Those buildings keep the town’s education and religious history visible beside the old mill story. Moores Hill is small, but its local map holds several layers at once: a gristmill settlement, a college town, a postal accident, and a crossroads community in Dearborn County.
