Mooresburg, TN

Mooresburg is an unincorporated Hawkins County town along U.S. 11W between Rogersville and Bean Station. The Moore family settled here around 1800, and Major Hugh Moore laid out the town on land he had purchased. The older roads once followed the Holston River valley, but Cherokee Lake changed the shoreline after the Tennessee Valley Authority impounded the river in 1941. That shift left Mooresburg connected to a lake landscape of coves, forest, and scattered farms.

Mooresburg Elementary serves kindergarten through fifth grade, giving the community a local school address and a gathering point for families from the surrounding roads. The planned Poor Valley Creek State Park never came to fruition, but the forested land north of town still shapes the area’s recreation and conservation conversations. U.S. 11W carries trips toward Rogersville, Bean Station, Morristown, and the broader East Tennessee network. Mooresburg is a place where a nineteenth-century family settlement meets a twentieth-century reservoir, with the old road pattern still visible around the changed waterline.
