Moorhead, MN

Downtown Moorhead gained a new all-season gathering place in April 2026 when The Loop community center and library opened at Center Avenue and Fifth Street. The building combines the Lake Agassiz Regional Library branch with a children’s play area, community rooms, a free entrepreneurship and coworking center, and an eighth-mile indoor walking circuit overlooking downtown and the Red River. That addition arrived in a growing county seat: Moorhead increased from 44,505 residents in the 2020 census to an estimated 46,533 in July 2025. The Red River forms the state line and downtown edge opposite Fargo, but the city has its own large institutional presence. Minnesota State University Moorhead and Concordia College occupy campuses south of downtown, and MATBUS routes connect Moorhead and Fargo Monday through Saturday. MSUM students can use the entire fixed-route system without a fare through the U-Pass program.

The riverfront joins recreation with some of Moorhead’s most specific cultural landmarks. At the city-owned Hjemkomst Center, the Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County exhibits a full-scale Viking ship that sailed to Norway in 1982, a replica of Norway’s Hopperstad Stave Church, county archives, and changing exhibitions. Viking Ship Park outside hosts river launches and shore fishing; the city’s 2026 calendar also placed a weekly farmers market, paddling outings, and RiverArts programs there. Farther south, Gooseberry Mound Park links by pedestrian bridge to Fargo’s Lindenwood Park and supports a 3.1-mile cross-country-ski loop in winter. The Red River is managed infrastructure as well as recreation space: in spring 2026 the city sought permits for new floodwall work at Riverfront and Davy/Memorial parks.
