Moorland, KY

Moorland is a Jefferson County home rule-class city with 433 residents in the 2020 census. The city occupies only about 0.09 square miles on Louisville’s east side: Lyndon surrounds it to the south, east, and west, while consolidated Louisville/Jefferson County lies to the north. La Grange Road and nearby Lyndon businesses supply the everyday commercial edge, and mature trees, lawns, and mid-century houses define the residential streets. With downtown Louisville about 11 miles away, Moorland sits in a tiny pocket inside the larger metro.

Moorland was incorporated in 1959, when the former fields and wooded ground were being remade into a postwar neighborhood. The name is generally tied to the area’s earlier woodland and moor-like terrain. Large plantations occupied parts of the area in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and farming continued after the Civil War until the mid-20th century. Today, Moorland’s character comes from its scale and setting: a small independent city enclosed by Lyndon and Louisville, with a mid-century housing pattern and a history that reaches back to rural Jefferson County.
