Morgantown, IN

Morgantown is a Morgan County town at the meeting point of Indiana 135 and 252, on the wooded southeast side of the county. Robert Bowles and Samuel Teeters laid out 52 lots in March 1831, and the post office followed in 1833. The town’s old center still carries that early layout, with the Morgantown Historic District preserving the houses, storefronts, and civic buildings that grew around the original streets. Indian Creek runs along the southern edge before heading toward the White River, so the local map has both a town grid and a creek valley running through it.

Morgantown’s present-day role is part crossroads, part gateway toward Brown County. State Route 135 brings through traffic, the county library has a branch in town, and the historic district gives the center a recognizable shape even as most errands spread along the roads. This is a place where the first plat still matters: walk a few blocks and you can see the difference between an old county town and a newer strip of development. Morgantown is small, but it has a clear origin story, a preserved center, and a creek at the edge of the map.
