Morganza, LA

Morganza is an incorporated village in Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana, on the lower end of a bend in the Mississippi River and within the Baton Rouge metropolitan area. The 2020 census counted 525 people, down from 659 in 2000. River geography is central here: the bend has brought repeated flooding, and the Morganza Spillway sits immediately north of the village, connecting the Mississippi to the Atchafalaya Basin. The village was established in 1908 and named for Colonel Charles Morgan, giving the modern settlement a nineteenth-century-sounding name even though its most visible landmark is a twentieth-century flood-control project.

The spillway is a defining piece of local infrastructure. Congress authorized the project in the 1936 Flood Control Act; construction began in 1949 and finished in 1954. The floodway extends south from the Mississippi toward the Atchafalaya Basin and can divert up to 600,000 cubic feet of water per second when the Corps considers river conditions dangerous. Its 3,906-foot structure has 125 gated openings, a scale that makes the neighboring farm and levee landscape part of a regional flood-control system. At full operation, the gates turn the spillway into a relief route for the Mississippi, sending water across the floodway toward the Atchafalaya Basin rather than through the main river channel. The structure's gates and long floodway remain the village's clearest physical connection to the river system.

Morganza's Civil War history is visible in the village's markers and historical sites. Union troops established an encampment there after the Red River Campaign, and the village's current website points to the battles and a cafe location used in Easy Rider. The village provides gas and water, while Pointe Coupee Parish handles drainage and garbage. The local scoop is a river-bend village whose everyday scale is tiny, while its spillway links it to the engineering and flood decisions of the lower Mississippi.
