Morning Sun, IA

Morning Sun is a Louisa County city in southeastern Iowa, laid out by Cicero Hamilton in 1851. It sits in Morning Sun Township about a mile and a half north of the Louisa-Des Moines county line, with Iowa Highway 78 running along the northern edge and Wapello about six miles away. The city grew at the scale of a county road town, surrounded by farm ground and connected to the larger Muscatine area.

Morning Sun had a post office by 1851 and became part of a much bigger experiment in 1896, when it was chosen as Iowa's first town for testing rural-free-delivery mail. Horseback and bicycle carriers carried letters from the post office into the countryside, turning the town into a small laboratory for a service that would later change rural life across the country. That history still fits Morning Sun's map: a compact center, a highway at the edge, and roads reaching outward to farms, neighbors, and the Louisa County seat.
